Things to do
The tea estates around Ella are best explored on foot. Beginning directly from Uga Ghiri, this walk follows quiet estate tracks and sections of the Pekoe Trail through the Modera and Newburgh estates. The route winds past neatly tended tea bushes, shaded forest paths, and open stretches where the hills fall away to reveal the valley below. Along the way, you’ll catch glimpses of the Nine Arch Bridge and Kubalwela Buddhist monastery, one of the most recognisable landmarks in the Ella area.
The trail passes through working tea estates where the day carries on around you. Tea pickers move steadily through the fields, estate villages sit quietly among the plantations, and old planter’s bungalows remain part of the landscape. It’s a side of the hill country that’s easy to miss from the roadside, but one that gives this walk its character.
