Things to Do
As daylight fades over Sri Lanka’s southern coast, make your way to Rekawa Beach, where the sea falls quiet and another world begins to stir. Accompanied by local guides, walk along the shore after dark for the chance to witness sea turtles emerge from the ocean and slowly make their way up the sand to nest. Green and Olive Ridley turtles are most commonly seen, while Loggerhead, Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles make rarer appearances. Beyond the encounter itself, Rekawa offers a glimpse into a story of community-led conservation, where local guides draw on generations of knowledge to protect the turtles and their nesting grounds. The experience is one of patience and quiet observation, with no touching of turtles or hatchlings and no flash photography, allowing this ancient ritual to unfold undisturbed.
A night by the ocean, shared with some of its oldest travellers.
