Velgam Vihara

The ruins of the little-known ancient monastery – Velgam Vihara – lay hidden in the dense jungle near the quaint Periyakulam Tank. Its ancient stone inscriptions testify to the fact that both Sinhala and Tamil Buddhists venerated this site for generations.

A quick visit to the legendary Kanniya hot springs nearby makes for the perfect combination, as the hot wells are believed to be part of a spiritual network, giving rise to tales of its magical properties.
