Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka’s first capital, and what remains tells you how central Buddhism was to everything built here. The scale still surprises with massive dagobas rising against the sky, monastic complexes that once housed thousands of monks and irrigation systems that fed an entire city.
Our guides walk you through the major sites and fill in what the stone can’t say on its own. Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiri each has its own history and its own engineering feat behind it. Some were the tallest structures in the ancient world when they were built.
The Sri Maha Bodhi is the oldest living human-planted tree on earth, grown from a cutting of the original tree under which the Buddha sat. Pilgrims have been coming here for over two thousand years, and you feel that continuity standing beneath it.
Between the big monuments are quieter spaces such as ruined monasteries where monks studied, twin ponds so still they reflect the sky perfectly and stone carvings worn smooth by time and weather. Walking through takes a few hours, but the sense of what was here, what mattered to the people who built it, stays with you longer.
